What will students learn

Students will accurately replicate running, jumping and throwing skills and learn specific techniques for events in order to improve performances. They will carry out investigations into aspects of technique and use the information to become more technically proficient. In all athletic activity, students will engage in performing and improving their skills and personal bests in relation to speed, height and distances. Track and field events will follow the Super 8 format - hurdles, 100m, 200m, (300/400m), 800m, relay, javelin, shot putt, long jump, high jump.

Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic

Students are familiar with a number of athletics disciplines however, they will have very limited knowledge and understanding of the techniques used to compete in hurdles, javelin and high jump. Students will investigate how these techniques will make their performance faster, further, higher. They will learn how to participate in these disciplines safely and to their personal best.

This is knowledge       that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding

Students will recap the techniques learnt in the SHA topic on sprinting and speed endurance (100m, 200m, 300/400m). They will recap endurance techniques what they learnt through the cross country/fitness topic (800m) They will also recap the shot putt technique but how to apply it to the standard weight used for their age class. Long jump will be revisited but this time how the techniques are applied to the  runway, take off board and pit. Students will also recap the importance of fitness to performance - skill related and health related fitness components.

Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic To  practice techniques/strategies required for a variety of  athletics events (hurdles, 100m, 200m 300/400m, 800m, long jump, high jump, javelin, shot putt), compete in various  track/field events following the correct rules and regulations.
This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop

Apply the techniques developed in each sports hall athletic event to outdoor athletics event e.g. the importance of arms, legs and head during sprint technique, strategies to apply to overcome an opponent e.g. downward/upward sweep during relay changeover, how to start a track event, rules of each event, how an event is timed / measured. Students must know how to use a stopwatch correctly.

Key vocabulary that students should know and understand

Long jump, high jump, javelin, shot putt, rules and regulations.

The Big Question  How has athletics changed since ancient times?
