In December 2017 The Department for Education published the new careers guidance strategy.

The eight Gatsby Benchmarks are a key element of the strategy and are as follows:

  1. A Stable Careers Programme
  2. Learning from Career and Labour Market Information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of work places
  7. Encounters with Further and Higher Education
  8. Personal Guidance

To see how me meet these benchmarks, please see our career programme for 2022/23.

Please click here to see the careers programme for 2022/2023

The careers programme is reviewed, evaluated and updated at regular intervals throughout the year with the support of the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC).  We measure and assess the impact of the careers programme against the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks with feedback from parents, carers, students, staff, employers and external providers.

Sir John Thursby Community College works within a Careers Hub with the support of the CEC to achieve the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks.

The careers provision is evaluated by completing termly evaluations on the Careers and Enterprise Compass Plus tool which shows how we are meeting the Gatsby benchmarks.

Parents are given the opportunity to complete feedback questionnaires at KS4 parents evenings and students are asked for feedback after large careers events.

From this year students in years 7,9 and 11 will complete the Careers & Enterprise Company 'Future Skills' questionnaire which will highlight to both the student themselves and staff the knowledge they have of careers, KS4, post 16 provision and local and national LMI. This will allow the careers programme to be developed to ensure we are meeting the needs of all our students.

The next review of the programme will be in July 2023.

As well as our comprehensive careers programme we also have a detailed careers policy outlining how we meet Gatsby benchmarks and work with external providers. To view our Careers Policy including our Baker Clause Provider Access Policy please click here

We are always looking at ways to improve and increase our careers provision in school, based on feedback from staff, students, providers, Governors and advisers we developed a 3 year strategic careers plan. Please click here to view.

Each year with the support of LCC we track the destinations of where our leavers have moved onto. You can see your destination tracking policy as an appendix in our Careers Policy. Below is an overview of where our students have moved on to in the last 5 years. Please  note NEET stands for Not in Education, Employment or Training)

In addition to the careers programme the following support is also available:

Careers Guidance Interview

A careers guidance interview is an impartial, one-to-one meeting between students and a professionally qualified careers adviser.

A careers guidance interview is not like a job interview - there are no right or wrong answers.  These meetings are to offer support and advice about post 16 options they can also help students to recognise their skills qualities and interests so that they can make well informed and realistic decisions about their future career.

During the meeting the students are offered; accurate and up-to-date information, the opportunity, if suitable, to complete a personality-based assessment which helps individuals to know themselves better, alternative sources of information and help if required, an action plan to help them move forward.

A record is kept of each meeting and shared with the students.

Bright Futures Careers Office

The students are welcome to drop in to speak to Mrs Starr at break, lunch time and after school every day.

College prospectus, training provider information, employers contact details and application forms are all available for students to access.  There is also lots of information regarding Universities and open events information.

Parents Evenings

Mrs Starr will be present at Years 8, 9, 10 & 11 Parents Evenings, Year 9 Options Evening for advice on options.  Local colleges and training providers will also be present at these events.

Young Enterprise Visit to Downing Street

Burnley Express have just published an article all about our Young Enterprise Students visit to London, please click here to read the full story.

National Careers Week 2021

As part of National Careers Week 2021 we were very lucky to have 3 very successful people from Burnley take the time to talk to us about their careers. Watch the videos below to see Jay Rodriguez (Burnley FC player), Sophie Hitchon (Olympic medallist) and Dave Fishwick (successful business man and TV personality) answer the questions that you asked!

Year 10 Careers Day 2021

On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th July Year 10 students received 2 days of Careers based learning. We were very lucky to be able to invite guest speakers into school for the first time this academic year and the students really enjoyed working with them.

On Thursday, students took part in a ‘Launch Pad Enterprise Masterclass’ run by Young Enterprise. Working in groups they were given a business which they had to name, market and finance then pitch their idea to the rest of their year group. There were some fantastic businesses and the students worked really well together taking on the different roles of a company. Thank you to the staff from Young Enterprise who came in to deliver this session.

Students also had the chance to watch a virtual workplace tour from local businesses and via video call have a live Q&A with people who worked there.  We had a wide range of local businesses showcasing lots of different employment sectors and career paths including Engineering, Law, Sport & Leisure, Hospitality and Health & Social care. Thank you very much to the businesses VEKA, Napthens Solicitors, Burnley Leisure, Tap Select and Pendleside Hospice who took time out of their busy work to talk to our students, they all learnt a lot.

At the end of the day teachers delivered a NatWest ‘Career Sense’ lesson where students learnt about making informed choices to make a business financially successful this included looking at topics such as green initiatives and cyber attack threats.

On Friday, students did a Young Enterprise Course called ‘Digital Me’, in this course students had to complete various units including CV writing, personal skills and strengths and personal statement writing. This course allowed the students to explore and reflect on their own personal qualities and to think about how they would make themselves appealing to prospective employers. Students who completed the course got a certificate to put in their Record of Achievement.

Students also listened to a ‘Pathfinder’ talk. This involved 3 guest speakers explaining different qualifications available after Year 11. This included Mr Joseph from Clitheroe Royal Grammar talking about A-levels, Chris and Grace from Burnley College talking about vocational courses and the new T-level qualification and Vicki from Training2000 telling students about apprenticeships. There was lots of new and important information for students to think about and they listened really well.

Throughout the 2 days we had guest speakers from ‘ASK’ apprenticeships and Burnley College. Tim from ‘ASK’ worked with students to help them with their interview skills, students had to work in teams to interview each other for jobs and give constructive feedback. The students really enjoyed this activity and it helped them work on their confidence and speaking and listening skills. Chris from Burnley College did a ‘College Life’ lesson where he explained all about the ‘extra’ bits of being a college student such as NUS, volunteering programmes, enrichment activities, trips and residentials; it all sounded very exciting, and the students were very keen to find out more!

Thank you to all the Year 10 students and staff for supporting and engaging with the careers days so well and thank you to our guest speakers for giving our students some fantastic opportunities.
