What will students learn  Students need to be able to identify elements from physical and chemical properties. They need to know the products of metals reacting with acids. That metals can be arranged as a reactivity series. Know what oxidation is. Describe oxidation, displacement and metal- acid reactions with a word  and symbol equation. Use particle diagrams to represent oxidation, displacement and metal- acid reactions. Know what a base is. Know how to carry out a neutralisation reaction and predict the salts formed. Know the hazards of acids and alkalis. Know the pH scale, what indicators are and be able to identify the best indicator.
Key Knowledge that students should know at the end of 'Topic' This is the knowledge that students will meet for the first time in this topic 

Properties of metals and non- metals. Metals react with acids to produce salts + hydrogen. The products of acid reactions with metals and bases. The reactivity series. Oxidation and displacement reactions. The chemical symbols for acids. Writing word and symbol equations for metal- acid reactions, oxidation and displacement. The hazards of alkalis. The pH scale and what it shows. Choosing the correct indicators and how to use them.

This is knowledge that students may have met before but will need to deepen their understanding  Students should have a basic understanding of the hazards of acids. They should be able to explain that new materials are made in a chemical reaction.
Key Skills that students should be able to demonstrate at the end of 'Topic' This is the skills  that students will meet for the first time in this topic Writing word and symbol equations. Drawing particle diagrams to represent oxidation, displacement and metal-acid reactions. The safe handling of acids and alkalis. Practically carrying out acid reactions, including neutralisation. Practically using indicators to inform of pH. Practically using the pH scale.
This is skills that students may have met before but will need to develop  Students will not have come across the skills required for this topic in KS2
